STOP! Warning light comes up on dash...

Hello to the Forum!
My beloved year 2000 2.5 V6 tdi auto has developed an anoying habit of displaying a huge "STOP!" message and then further info about a brake fault from time to time.
It doesn't happen all the time but it's a likelyhood on most journeys now, it varies on how long it takes to come up, sometimes 2 mins and others 45mins.
My local garage has tried clearing the faults with their diagonstic kit but it just comes up again. They say it reads either ABS sensor fault or ECU reporting error, depending oon when it occurs.
They are a trusted and honest garage that I've known for years and have refused to take payement for their work on the groundfs the haven't fixed it but have said it needs to go to VW to be diagnosed.
Is this the case or is their anyone in Kent who I can turn to 1st?
