part id

hey guys sorry for the very newb question but can anyone tell me what the part is thats damaged here.

a car ran into the back of me today and although the rear bumper seems to have stood up well to the impact. after closer inspection it seems that the metal bar thats directly behind the bumper is a bit dented / twisted . the metal bar i should mention is " U " shaped and seems to run the lenght of the bumper although im not sure if its bolted on or what at the ends.

i know its probably a daft question but i need to know what the name of the part thats bent actually is so that i can find out more about it and how to fix it .
