What's My Dipstick Telling Me?

First of all, can I clarify where the oil should be on this dipstick, as I've not seen one like it before and the handbook describes a regular flat one.

I'm thinking 1 is the maximum, 2 is the normal level and 3 is the minimum?

My oil warning light came on and when I checked it, it was down where I've put the number 4. I've put about 2 litres in and it's now up to where I've put the 2.

Thing is, the car had an oil change service by VW in October, before I bought it. Since then it's covered only 2500 miles and I'm thinking 2 litres in that time seems a lot. Definitely no oil leaks showing up on the drive and the engine seems to be running well. Only got 47000ish on the clock. 2.0l petrol.

Does this sound normal?
