B5 dashboard removal - heater matrix :(

Post by bhodgkiss » Sat Aug 25, 2018 7:15 am

Hi All!

Right my heater matrix is leaking so I've bought a replacement

Such a shame the dash has to come out

What's the best way please to minimise what I remove?

Do I need to remove the steering wheel?

Many thanks

Replaced mine good five years ago or so, but I remember definitely, that steering wheel can stay on, I just set it in lowest position and maximum out. Dash was coming out over steering wheel then. For that job I would suggest to choose place where you can widely open both doors, private garage mostly is a bit too narrow. If you will be doing it first time, I would say it will take a full day.

I also had to do this a few years ago now.

Also left the steering wheel and column in place but had to let it rest on an axle stand inside the car. Reason being I took the crash rail out to get access to the (massive) heater box out

There is a single bolt (or was it a nut) for the crash rail located in the plenum, engine bay side.

Aircon needs to be de-gassed and if you want the A/C to work afterwards, obviously will need re-gassing. But to split the A/C at the bulkhead you will need a couple of 'o' rings and a PAG46 oil (A/C system oil) to wet the 'o' rings. While it was all apart I also changed the the A/C evap rad in the heater.

Take a photo of or remember the switch connections ot the center console / radio area.

Took me a whole weekend.

Mine doesn't have air con, so was a bit easier. And good advice from Colin about taking pictures of switches and wiring loom, because it's too easy to route it through wrong place and once dashboard is back in, only then you realise, that loom is too short and you can't put back switches.

Ha! K seal doesn't feel right to me :)

I don't have aircon (well it's been removed) so all fine there - in fact I'll be removing the evaporator while I'm In there

I watched a YouTube vid by a northern chap called road runner (funny video actually with the amount of swearing, link below) and actually looks ok, so will give it a go!

Exactly, k seal is not the best way to do it, especially if you're keeping car for yourself. I took advice from YouTube videos as well, easier to do it once you already expect what's behind the dashboard.

There is an excellent vid on utube by an Eastern European lad, worth looking for, AND, you can understand him! :-o

Kseals worked fine for last 4 years, each to there own i fully understand the best practice argument but the life's too short won out for me!

Howey,

I can second that k-seal sorted my matrix can't remember exactly when maybe 5 or 6 years ago, I must admit I wasn't keen on doing it but at the time it made sense if it was to fail again I would replace the matrix.

But I'm not saying it's the correct method.
Depends how much time space and patience you have.

Well this is 90mins in, going ok so far!

I'm now at work.

Can I leave the metal cross beam in place to get at the heater matrix and evaporator?

For car without A/C it can stay on. I don't know maybe it's different for A/C equipped car.

I took the crash rail out as I couldn't even find or work out how the heater box would or could come out otherwise.

If there is a way to avoid taking it out, that would be a massive time saver as it is a right sod of a job.

I'm fixing my cigarette lighter, removing the evaporator and fixing the glowplug light at same time :)
K-seal is just cheating :)

Right I'm back onto this, how does this right hand metal bracket come off please? And does it actually need to? I can't see any further fixings; at the rear it seems to simply bend 90degrees inwards and plug into the hvac unit? The left hand one came out easily.

Image

Here it suggests it can stay mounted to hvac unit and looks to show a bolt in a very inaccessible place (so hopefully can stay fitted)

Also I've removed the three big nuts holding the cross member and it still won't budge? Are there any fixings I need to access from under the bonnet please?

Ok I found two further fixings for the RH bracket, what a pain!

Where is the fixing for the cross beam
in the engine bay please?

It is on the underside of the windscreen area in the plenum, drivers side I recall.

Ok HVaC unit now removed, nothing required under the bonnet to loosen the cross beam, for info. I'd just missed a bolt which that link above shows (under steering column)

It's actually not a bad job.

Paying a garage hundreds would be depressing, it's simple enough you just need to take the car off the road for a few days if you've not done it before

I'll happily now do someone else's for £250 if the aircon is de-gassed first 😂

Hello everyone,

I am a new user to this forum. I have purchased a Passat B5.5 estate 1.8T this March as a cheap runaround for a year or two. Unfortunately, it developed a heater matrix fault, which needs to be replaced.

I was quoted between £800 - 1200 from different garages, which makes it completely uneconomical. However, I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to undertake the task of the dash removal (and then re-install) if I provide necessary parts.

I am based in south east London and I will cover the costs of journey/fuel in addition to actual labor costs.

Please let me know if anyone would be willing to do this, I am desperate to get the car fixed as I can't afford to get another one at the moment.

Many thanks and best regards

Michal

Thank you Howey, I might do it if no other option is available. As I have never used K seal before - where do you pour it in?

I also had a quick look online for the new heater and there appears to be a whole range of them, with prices ranging from below £20 (see: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/nrf/7751458) to around £350 for Valeo branded part (https://www.autodoc.co.uk/valeo/7116005).

Does anyone know whether the price difference is caused purely by the branding (Valeo vs. non-Valeo) or are there any other important differences?

Many thanks

Seriously go the k seal route, you want a quick easy solution and here it is!
My bros B5 would literally cover the cab in steam spraying out the vents when activated!
Simply follow the instructions, forms a permanent seal and gives a beaming smile on your face!
Lasted around 5 years in my bros and still no problems!!
Give it a go!
I would guess just 2 different heater matrix the A/C type and none A/C type but thats a guess!
Good luck!
