New noise - drone

Post by PSimmo » Wed Jul 03, 2019 12:02 pm

hi, this started recently after a session on the motorway, this car is used as a 10 mile daily commute. any way, this is noticeable when the engine is started and in neutral. noise increases as engine revs increase. a dull drone .. tried running without belts on, noise disappears, tried a new alternator, aux belt tensioner.

been to three different garages who cant pinpoint it from a road test. one said is the gearbox.

any feedback would be great

thanks

Viscous fan bearing would be a prime culprit.

what sort of a job is this, looks like it sits in the alternator mounting bracket. had this changed a couple of years back but wont use that grg again. thought i bought a geunuine one last time and should last longer than this (if the noise is this) i do 6k a year mostly a 10 mile round trip to work. as i mentioned before, noise came after a motorway trip, pushed her quite hard though..

thanks

The job isn't difficult. The bolts on the front need to come off, then follow the line of the centre bolt through the block and at the back of the web to which the fan is bolted you will find access to an allen bolt, 6 or 7mm. Come back to the front, find a thin spanner for the centre shaft and there you go. It could be power steering pump, another easy job. :D

No, when I did mine I drew it out with some large sockets and threaded bar.

Note that the viscose bearing itself sits within the large aluminium bracket which carriers the alternator PAS pump etc.

I'll see If I can dig out some pics of when I did it.
