Warning - glow plugs

Post by bhodgkiss » Wed Jun 13, 2018 12:20 pm

Just thought I'd share this one

A colleague at work with a 1.4TDI PD Audi A2, changed his glow plugs the other week.

He went online and was sent some replacement BERU items.

They turned out to be 5V and not 11V and literally melted the ends of the plugs instantly (down his driveway) and dropped bits of glow plug into the cylinders, causing various piston and bore damage.

Worth checking what you get sent if not buying for VW

We may not have the same confusion on the 1.9TDI's, but on the 1.4TDi the various different engine codes used different types.

That's worring I'm sure he's looking at a massive bill of replacement of the car!
Problem with buying parts online for cheap is that there are often choices and different options, defiantly worth checking part numbers etc if you buy online

Where "online" was this? Sounds more like counterfeit parts to me!

No it was just the 5v part fitted instead of 11v as mentioned above

Always presumed all glow plugs were 12v!

The seller should be legally responsible for any consequential damage caused from supplying the wrong parts! In this case a replacement engine sounds like the way to go if the vehicle is to be repaired!

I've just done a quick search and yes, some of the glowplugs are 5 volt. How are they supplied with 5v at what must be such a high current, and why are they not 12 volt when 12v is so easily available from both the vehicle battery and main electrical system?
