thermostat

Post by bobfish45 » Fri Dec 01, 2017 9:07 pm

Bought a new thermostat from TPS today, when it arrived I nearly choked at the price,£28.43!!! Now I always buy genuine sensors etc, but this is going back to be replaced by £4.16 item from ECP

Replaced mine with ecp thermostat approx 4 weeks ago now engines stays at a steady 90 degrees. When the cost difference is like 500% it makes sense

If the one from ecp is a Circoli (something like that) then start looking for a replacement they don't last mine lasted less that a week.
Gates are the thermostat's i buy and have no idea where the circoli one came about.

I have a circoli thermostat on shelf, ready to go in with all other bits when I will find time for it. So now you made me doubtful, should I use it or take something else. Last two water pumps was circoli, first one after 53k miles was looking like fitted yesterday, seal was perfectly dry, bearing spinning freely, so fitted the same one again. 25k done on it so far and running faultless. In past I have fitted circoli pumps to few more cars, and everything was fine. That's why I thought this brand can be trusted more or less. Maybe it's different story with their thermostats. Would be good to hear some more feedback about them.

Well in that case I may just leave old one in, because it works fine, 90° after 3 miles of city driving in these weather conditions. Only reason why I thought about changing it is, that I will change coolant due to cylinder head replacement and this stat is over 6 years old now and been in there 100k+ miles.

It's not as if there's a great deal of technology in a thermostat to justify the huge price,my sensor was 40 odd quid but I am happy to pay that as that sensor is quite critical.

Been out all day sorry.
Seen a lot on other forums about circoli thermostats failing so i wouldn't touch another one myself.
As said not a lot to a stat so why should they be good and bad ones.
Gates for me but other people might prefer another make.

Just compared vw/audi oem one(used thermostat, taken off in error. actually it was faulty instrument cluster years ago ) with circoli. Circoli both springs are a lot thinner than oem ones, so it could be that it struggles to shut properly and temperature doesn't go to 90° as should. New day -new lesson. Quality of circoli water pumps looks good, but thermostats seems a bit doggy. If anyone is interested, I can take pictures of them and upload, so people can see difference.

Due to the experiences quoted, I sent back my ECP circoli thermostat and have fitted a QH one. :esm

I would like to do the same, but I doubt they will take it back, because it's been bought in beginning of October. Anyway was something like £3.50 after promotion code, so not the end of world.

Good that this conversation started about stats, otherwise I would fit it and if things wouldn't work, have to do it again.

Meyle is widely thought of as good quality, and they make a big play of it in their literature.

Thermostat has etched into it MEYLE GERMANY (though it doesn't say made in germany!)

They're all made in China and I'm just reading mixed reviews, looked at getting them last night.

Similar to Circoli, I've personally never had an issue using them and tempted to get that again.

It's hard to find anything that's not made in China these days. Even the major companies can't help but get things manufactured there because of the low production cost.

Made in China isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a matter of getting the quality control tied down.

I remember reading years ago that a product can have "Germany" on it if it passes thru Germany however "made in Germany" is a totally different thing!
