Discs and pads

Post by Chopper » Thu Oct 12, 2017 4:51 pm

Evening all. I'm due to replace discs and pads on my 03 4motion tdi estate and wondered what was the current preference? I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want poo. There are well priced brembo discs on eBay but again, don't know what's good and what to avoid. Also there seems to be a lot of different size options even when you put your reg in the searches....
Can someone point me in the right direction?! ^:)^

Thanks for the quick reply mate. Any idea which size I need? Without looking do I need vented?

The size (and obviously the part number) will change depending on the specification of your particular car.

Have a look at the options label (called PR codes) which you will find in the spare wheel well and the inside of the service record book. This will list the options that were applicable to your car during production. Among them will be the codes that indicate the size of brake discs that were fitted.

From what I can see in the parts listing, the code/sizes are:

FRONT discs:

1ZC, 1LE. 288x25 (5 bolt vented)

1LT. 312x25 (5 bolt vented)

1LC. Size not stated, but different part numbers for left and right, (used with 4 pot caliper).

1ZF, 1ZG. 321x30 (5 bolt vented) (used with 4 pot caliper).

REAR discs:

1KD, 1KE, 1KF. 245x10 (5 bolt solid)

1KW, 1KJ. 269x22 (5 bolt vented)

This assumes that the car is still as it was built, and has not had any changes made to its brakes, such as someone fitting larger discs.

The info above is correct as far as I can tell, but in order to be 100% sure you should check with a VW dealer, (quote your VIN or reg), and/or measure the existing discs, which I realise is not exactly an easy task.

Hope this has helped a bit.
