Injector Readings

Post by Paulie » Fri Jan 13, 2017 6:30 pm

I have a 02 plate B5 and it has a smokey engine...it is white smoke and smells like diesel.

I have done a scan with VCDS and these are the readings of the injectors on idle...are these correct?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Erm not very good with diesels hopefully someone with more knowledge than me in them will be along shortly but too me cylinder 3 doesn't look right @ 0.00 maybe the injector has failed or more likely the harness isn't working correctly

Perfectly normal figures. You would see the reading maxed out at -2.99 or +2.99 if there was something wrong with it. The sum of those figures should be 0, that's why some are positive, some negative. I would hazard a guess and say that this is a VE engine and that the reference injector is no.3 to which the other injectors are compared to, that's why the third is reading 0.00.

Looks Ok to me, there are all within range and they balance out, the total should be around Zero, you have +0.89 and -0.92 so close enough.

Any idea what would cause the white smoke...which has a smell of diesel?

So this is a newer PD engine? How many miles has it done? Does the smoke clear after a while? What does the CF figure (timing) read?

^:)^ ^:)^ See I told you I knew nothing about diesels, I couldn't even get VCDS to give me a reading when I had mine that's why I got rid :hyst :hyst

Engine code is AVB...It's a 2002 SE TDI

It has done 120,000

The smoke doesn't clear at all...it does seems to be less after about 10 miles driving but it doesn't stop.

I will check the CF tomorrow as laptop battery died.

I am trying to find out if the timing belt has ever been changed.

When it is first started it does have a slight knock...it knocks a couple of times but once it is running there are no knocks at all.

Those injector readings are fine. I must admit I don't remember seeing 0.00 but as previously said they equal out nicely.

Don't forget to check and log coolant and fuel sensor values. A dodgy cts can cause rough starts.

Glow plugs, relay, fuse or even the loom but you do say it clears up after a while.

EGR can also fail which I have noticed can cause rough idle on startup but it's easy to check by pulling the vac line that's attached to it.

In my car smoke at cold starts was resolved by changing glow plugs. And any smoke after that is or was condensation because of not driving the car much.

Any idea what blocks I need to look at for fuel and coolant sensors....also what block to check the timing?

Timing was block 4 and all t° sensors you can see in group 13 if I remember correctly.
