Instrument cluster display on Y reg v 02?

Here is a question for all you instrument cluster display experts

I have an 02 1.9 TDI Sport 130 and my brother an 01' (Y) 1.8T sport - both have the half display

If his doors are left open - say drivers door, he gets a "Drivers door open" on the dash, an icon above and beeps, I get no text just the current mpg etc and the icon above, no sound?

Is this something which was removed on later cars or something which can be set?
