Ok,
Like a fool, and it would be nice if any of you like Mr T could pity the fool, I got this totally and utterly wrong.
I've edited this with the three following pictures showing the correct procedure. Strangely the weak point is on the end of the crankshaft and not the gearbox end which to me seems a bit weird.
Anyway, the pics;
Pic below showing knife edge puller on needle bearing. A worrying note; the instructions read "if needle bearing not fitted, retro fit". Now I reckon all 6 speeders would have this as standard but it is certainly worth making sure any 5 speeders have this done if it is missing.
Pic below showing VW tool for drifting in needle bearing, I don't know if they use a press or simply tap it in?
Pic below showing setting / depth of bearing.
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
As stated in the clutch thread, here are some piccies of the spiggot bearing procedure.
[could someone indert a link to the clutch thread here, I don't know how]... please
As dicussed in the other thread, I've heard stories about the spiggot bearing failing soon after a clutch install so in my mind it would be good practice to replace it. I'm a keen DIY'er and have done several clutches in the past so am up for doing the passat, the only thing stopping me is the spiggot bearing removal procedure as it invloves several specialist tools.
If anyone knows any more about this or if any substitute tools could be used or even if this is a BIG NO NO for a diyer, please state your views. I have to say I think for this I will end up (as much as I hate to) chucking the car into a specialist to get this done.
Anyway, here are the pics (don't ask where I got them from, I just did !)
Fisrt pic showing VW special tool for drifting the bearing. This assumes that you have already got your circlp pliers out and removed the main shaft from the box.
Second pic showing measured location of newly inserted bearing, dimension a=39.5mm
Pic 3 showing VW special tool for pressing in bearing in (also obviously assumes you have a press!)
Now the interesting bit, input shaft end play adjustment; pic 4 showing input shaft set on vw special tool which is a distance piece and a measurement taken to establish the required circlip thickness as follows;
Determining circlip x behind the input shaft ball bearing.
x = Dimension a - dimension b
x = 28.5 mm - 26.8 mm
x = 1.70 mm
Allocate circlip according to parts catalogue.
Now, there are loads of circlips available depending on what you measure and determine the 'x' dimension at.
I think I am going to chuck in the towel and get this done !!! I have had a quote of £680 all in including dmf, clutch and spiggot bearing.... lots of dosh but probably money well spent !
