How does this fit??

Ok, so today I decided to fit my coilovers. I've got the original shocks+springs off the car, removed the top mounts and now I'm ready to being building up the coilies. I've hit a snag. I'n the pic below you can see there is a large red metal ring at the top of the two front springs. The original top mount won't sit inside this ring due to the way it's shaped. I've been reading through Doobies thread, and it doesn't look like his coilies have this metal ring, so do I actually need it? (Doobies springs appear to mount pretty much the same way the stock ones would have).
