Few more pre-purchase questions - lights, stereo, cruise etc

Post by drainaudio »

Hi all,
I'm still looking for a Passat Estate but am narrowing down my choices, having done lots a looking and reading, effectively now either a Highline or Sport TDI 1.9 130 on an 03-05 plate with no more than 80k, FVWSH and private ownership.
Looking to purchase at the top of the market so Highline £7k ish and Sport £6k ish.

There are plenty of good examples about & currently I'm looking further into the purchase of one particular car, an 03 4motion in black.......looks like a lovely and clearly cherished example.

Plan on having a local specialist do a fine-toothed comb pre-sale inspection so I can have any issues dealt with as part of the sale agreement, every car I've looked at thus far also comes with a minimum 6 month warranty so purchasing a good example would appear to be a fairly simple process. Have to say every VAG specialist workshop I've spoken to seem really nice - 2 hrs maximum @ £49 per hour + vat for an inspection by techs who know these cars inside out makes an RAC or AA test at £170 odd quid look like a total waste of money.

Just have a couple of questions that I haven't been able to answer via web research:
Some of the cars I'm looking at appear to have Xenon's but clearly do not as there is no headlight washer system - what are these headlights, are they good? are they upgradeable?
I have Xenon's and additional driving lights on my current car (Cooper S) and they could light up a small town.

Gamma stereo - is it ok?
I'm not expecting it to sound like the HK system in the MINI but would like to know that it's a good quality and good sounding system - as I have an iPhone with the TomTom application and TomTom/iPhone car cradle on the way and mini jack/cassette adaptor (from the Jurassic period) plan is to use the stock setup. TomTom cradle gives you full map/iPod/handsfree operation audio fade in/out for calls/instructions etc in a simple setup.

Finally, cruise control - many of the advertised cars are a little vague in regards to the absolute finer details of the spec.
I'm noticing many cars have a stalk on the left and right of the steering wheel - does this signify cruise control is present or is this standard fare with the cruise being a stalk with even more buttons?

Thanks in advance, Geoff.
