Engine timing

Post by pointer »

To cut a long story short, I managed to change the camshaft oil seal on my B3 Passat but when cleaning up I must have dislodged the woodruff key from the shaft, and could I find it, NO ! ~x(

I managed to get a replacement but when tightening up the camshaft pulley it seemed a bit tight. I then noticed the woodruff key had come adrift so took the pulley off again. #:-s #:-s

I then noticed the position for the woodruff key had moved about 30 degrees.
I did manage to get the shaft back and correctly aligned for the pulley and tight it up. :ymdaydream:

However, I am unsure if the shaft had turned ( maybe just 30 degrees or maybe one or two revolutions as well) whilst the pulley was stationary thereby the possibility of incorrect timing needs to be resolved. I have looked at Haynes to check the timing but if any one can put it in a simple laymans terms , I would appreciate it. :-??
