STICKING HAND BRAKE ON B4

Post by DIOGENES »

My year 2000 VW Passat auto estate has done 66,000 miles.
Went in to local VW agent for MOT. Passed OK with no problems reported. Drove home about 15 miles mix of urban and rural roads not exceeding 50 mph. Put car in garage - noticed bad burning smell. Checked wheels and disks for temperature - all OK as normal warm - except RH rear [ driver's side ] which was hot to touch all over the alloy wheel. The disk was much too hot to touch for more than an instant.
Phoned VW agent - they claimed it could not have been caused by them as "We did nothing to the brakes".
I insisted they look again, and had to leave the car with them overnight as "all mechanics now gone home".
Next day collected car - "no defect found".

Since then the car has seemed OK.
Anyone else had this trouble?

I suspect that a very muscular mechanic heaved the hand brake on much harder than I ever could.
And the return springs could not cope.
Though this does not explain why only the RHS rear brake gave trouble.

Are there any lube points which could help prevent a repeat performance?

Not impressed with VW "EXPERTISE".
