White smoke from exhaust

Post by pointer »

I have an old 1991 Passat estate that has started to produce white smoke particularly after the engine has warmed up, although I generally only use it for short journeys to take the dogs for walks.

The smoke doesn't smell and I am not losing any coolant water. Top and bottom hoses to the radiator get hot although the temperature gauge takes an extremely long time to record temperature rise.

I have checked the compression pressures which 1, 2 and 4 show approx 150 psi and 3 shows 158psi.

There is a little white contamination (from condensation ?) on the oil filler cap but none on the dipstick

I have also been using more petrol lately.

The engine had a headgasket replacement a couple of years ago, and the head was skimmed at the same time.

Has anyone got any ideas as to remedies, although I probably wouldn't be wanting to spend too much on an old car that has done less than 100K miles ~x(
