Door handle help required ...Please help me ....

Ever since i brought my B4 estate the drivers door refuses to open usung the handle .
Ive replaced the door handle and the catch ,but the door still refuses to open from the outside .
Getting abit embarassing and tedeous getting in from the passenger side and clambering over the center console .
So please ,can anyone tell me if there is a proceedure to fitting the handle so it allows the catch to open the door?.
p.s How is the cable from the handle guided through the door to plug into the loom inside the door ?.
Ive pulled engines out and refitted ,but this job has done me in
