Here's a wee query for anyone who may have had this issue & might know a shortcut to a solution?
I was merrily driving my B4 vr6 & parked & decided to move the car further from the next one in the car park & it wouldn't start!
Just a click from the ignition relay but the starter motor didn't move...had a check for the usual loose connections etc & all ok. The headlights dim when trying the starter, so there's heavy-voltage going somewhere... 
anyone had a catastrophic starter-failure like this?I'll be having a shufty tomorrow but maybe someone's been there before?
Luckily, a nice fella gave me a hand to push it up the hill & it bump-started ok!
Any info appreciated!
