2.0 8v 2E Starting Problems

Having problems getting the passat started in the mornings, seems to start fine once its warmed up but when its cold it a nightmare.

i think i may have something to do with the choke because as soon as it gets warm it will run like a dream.

if you try pulling off junctions etc when cold it will try to die and loses power only to come back in a few seconds later...........

when starting it, it will turn over and start, rev to about 500rpm and then die, if you try and throttle it dies, after turning it over for about 3-4 mins, on and off, it finally will pick up and rev over 1k and then keep running.

sometimes it doesnt idle very well revving up on its own to about 1500rpm and then back down to 500rpm for a few mins.

anyone have any ideas?
