How to fix fog lights?

Not something I intend to use much at all, but I figured "if I've got them, they might aswell work".
Anyway, both my current Passat estate (Nreg) and previous estate (Mreg) had non-working fog lights. I have checked the fuses and they are fine.
Before I do the obvious and check the bulbs, is there a common fault on these models with the foglights that I should know about ie dodgy earths or similar?
