Engine codes 1.9TDI

This may have been asked before but couldn't find anything conclusive...
My wagon has no engine code to speak of- The smooth bit on the block where it should be is... really smooth (i.e. no letters
). So I looked in my haynes manual and read that if it has mechanical injection it's an AAZ. So whipped off the engine cover and saw that the injectors are directly linked to the pump, does this mean it's mechanical? I'm not sure because I have also read that mechanical injected diesel was branded 'TD' by VW, and electronic was branded 'TDI'; mine is a TDI... Confused
