Straightening bent door hinges.

Post by VolksKid83 » Sat Nov 26, 2016 9:20 pm

So, following not one of the best months, i am currently sorting my Passat after being side swiped by a drunk driver.

I have sorted the new panels (front drivers wing and drivers door), and have them ready to go on with replacement hinges for the door (the door half). However the other half of the hinge is bent, as so:

Compared to a scrap B3:

So, has anyone straightened these successfully before? As it stands i believe i have three options:
1) Straighten these. I've had a crack today with a King Dick adjustable spanner and a length scaffold tube, they are better but nowhere near and the tool slips off now!

2) Replace the individual hinges, doable however i anticipate getting those perfectly square difficult. Plus not sure if my migs up to doing such deep welds!

3) Replace the outer skin of the A-pillar from a donor with the hinges unmoved. Suggested by a local Mk2 Golf specialist, however looking at the many skins and spot welds it seems alot of chopping, welding and disturbing on a rot free structural area!

Would the use of heat help?

Replace. I cant remember if theyre welded or bolted, but if possible just replace, its highly unlikely you can get them perfectly aligned again.

Also check the structure for deformation, its also unlikely they took the force of impact without transference.

I've tried heat, the A-pillar works as a massive heat sink, i think Oxy-Acetylene is needed really!

I have measured and compared A-pillars, and it all seems straight, just the hinges to sort...

I'd have gone with a scaffold tube as well but as it isn't working you need to think bigger !

If the car moves..... a chain / strap / rope round that hinge peg and a big tree / post and rock the car to and fro using its weight to assist you. Sounds crazy and it is but might just work.

Or

Big blocks of timber right the way across the B-pillars then another from those blocks off a bottle jack onto the hinge peg, then jack it straight. Sounds crazy and it is but might just work.

There is one on ebay yes, a NOS item but the seller only has the one. Either way all sorted now!

I ended up letting my local body shop sort it, they know the car and the only work space i have at the moment has no electricity source, so welding isn't an option! I cut an A-pillar from a scrap Passat, and they used one hinge from that to replace my top hinge, and straightened the lower hinge with lots of swearing. They also told me never to bring it back for a hinge to be changed again x_x
Its now sat at my garage waiting for Autoglass to replace the windscreen, meaning it should be back on the road soon!

Excellent stuff! Sounds like the body shop had fun.

I might call autoclave myself soon as I think the seal has gonna a bit iffy around the bottom of the screen.

Well, i haven't been impressed so far, i rang on the 19th December to confirm my order for them to replace my screen, and was told it was a special order item as they don't hold it in stock (fair enough for a B3!). The original fitting date was the 28th Dec, they messed up when i tried to change to an afternoon appointment so i ended up with the 6th Jan.
Having got rather excitied that the B3 will be back on the road, they rang me yesterday morning saying that the technician couldn't find the windscreen in their depot, and infact they had never taken delivery. The new fitting date is now the 20th Jan.

Frustratingly i had a NOS VW screen fitted in it mid 2015 by a local screen fitter to get rid of the horrible white delamination mine used to have. So the new one will be winscreen No.3 within three years. ~x(
