B3 earthing issues

hi guys! i am having major issues with the lights on my B3 2.0 estate and wondered if there is anywhere obvious i should look at before i crack out the multi-meter.........

headlights work fine but pressing the brake pedal occasionally causes all 4 indicators to glow dimly and the indicators are a law unto themselves, work ok sometimes but more often than not they will speed up/slow down and cause the opposite side ones to flash dimly too

is this common? it's got me tearing my hair out!!!
