1.6 TD starter motor noisy - any ideas?

Hi. The starter motor on my 1.6TD has been noisy for a while. Thinking of stripping it down but TBH need to have some idea of what bit is worn out otherwise I'm lost.

This is what it does ...... Engages fine and turns engine. As engine fires the starter makes a kinda groaning sound for a second or so - sounds like a cow mooing it's last breath . Once the noise is done all is ok.

Any ideas?

I guess I could wait until it dies but I think I read on here that the 1.6 TD starter is not the same as the B4 1.9 so hard to find an exchange.
