Petrol or Diesel

Hi,
I know it sometimes takes awhile for a reply here, so no worries.
I am running a 1.9 TDi PD on a V plate with 121k it is a basic model and it shows it's age but runs ok,
AS I posted in the B5/5.5 section I have the chance to be given an 03, B5.5, 2.0 sport, 130k, engine code ALT so 20v?
It is lovely except the fuel economy compared to my old diesel,
I am looking to get a remap as I intend to keep one of them to mod up nicely and keep running, I was wondering the difference/comparison I could expect for a remap of them.
Would a remap bring the economy and performance of the petrol closer to the TDi? and if the TDi was mapped would that be better still, I know a TDi has a lot of grunt to call on.
I guess what I am asking (badly) is which would yield better figures on a decent remap?
