Engine cutting out.

Hi all, I'm a newbie here, so please don't rip me to shreds straight away.
I have a couple of problems with my 2003 1.9 TDI.
Normal cold starting is perfect, cant fault it. If I drive to the petrol station which is about a mile away from a cold start, it wont restart at all. I have to wait for the orange "coil" looking light on the dash to come on before it will start. Not sure if this is a fuel problem or immobiliser issue.
The other problem is that recently, I'd be driving along from a cold or warm start and the engine will just die without warning. No jerking or spluttering, just stops. I thought that it may be the fuel filter.... possibly?
Any help from you Passat gurus would be greatly appreciated!
