New to the group! 77 b1 estate

Post by Fatboy Jones » Thu Nov 15, 2018 11:48 pm

Hi all, I've got a 1977 b1 type 33 estate! Not seen the road in over 18 years, only has 62k and full service history. So this is where the hate will start.
The outside is going to be left exactly how I found it with 18+ years of patina with the interior fully re done to look new!
Engine was a 1.3 4speed with knackered linkages. Will be changing that but unsure just now what to.
Its going to be on full custom air ride, narrowed rear beam to tuck 17" alloys, custom Honda type R suspension up front running mk3 golf hubs and brakes. And Audi 80 19mm lower ball joints.

This is the best picture I have currently of her. Sitting static with no air attached yet as I'm making the rear beam and waiting for the time to get everything else done!
Looking forward to some positive replies but expecting a lot of poo!

Cheers Fatboy

Looking forward to see this progress, can't be many of these left now. Your plans are probably the route I'd take, do like a bit of real patina (not the forced look).

I'm guessing you're looking to show so I would have the engine and underneath all restored and detailed. Tbh wish I had the skills/finances for this type of a project.

Cracking looking motor.

Out of interest why type R front suspension?

Also keen to see rear beam in progress, basically just cutting section out of the middle?

Not sure what it shares with the B2 but there's an air ride set on ebay that I've just spotted, listed for an audi 80 but they were the same car more or less. Problem with the B2 is the height of the track control arm being so far up the struts, so changing hubs for mk3 is not really possible making good lows tricky, b1 might be different.

Anyway get cracking and keep us updated

Yeah I will be looking to show next year hopefully.

Using the Honda suspension as it steers from the shock arm and has the 2 bolt for the hubs, just slight modification on the mounting point and some spacers and they fitted fine. Modified the original track rod arms and fitted Honda track rod ends.

For the rear beam I will be cutting down whatever I need to narrow it by from behind the hubs mounting point and carefully trimming the portion bar what runs between then cleaning the hub mount and welding it all back together. Along with making new plates to sit the air bag lower and at the correct angle.

I've seen the air kits available but I'm set on getting a lot lower than what I think they will provide. Looking to tuck 7.5j alloys in the original wheel wells with no body modifications and defiantly no camber on the rear!

I will keep everyone updated all the way through the thread :)

So they do... ^:)^ just what I've been after for the B2, currently have 30mm lowering springs but want a bit more while running static which the current struts won't really permit, not aiming for slammed this time but somewhere near.

Take much fettling to get the Honda track ends on and struts in?

Then I'd go with audi 80 hubs? Won't have that extra steering arm flapping about then.

An angle grinder sorts out the unnecessarily flappy arms lol

As for the track rod arms, shortened, drilled and tapped to m14x1.5 added some threaded bar and used the track rod ends

I never saw one in my life before I stumbled across this and my misses pointed It out to me when we was driving.

From what I can find this is the last rhd UK registered round headlights estate in the country! But please please tell me if I'm wrong

Progress will happen as soon as I've got my t4 back up and running. Will make sure I take plenty of pictures

Hi, I was wondering how the b1 engine and box went. And also whether you have a spare set of engine mount brackets kicking around?
