thats not totally accurate. they never did a 1.3 in the B2, at least not in the uk. and dont think we got anything over a 2.0 either. mines a 1.8 and its from 1983 so that deffo didnt just start in 1986.

Hi Karl

Thanks for that, if you look at my post for Interior trim you will see a B reg GL5 estate first registered on 1 May 1985, if you are interested I have got a complete bumper for a GL5 plus a lot of other interior parts if it is in brown. Also you asked what the price was, I have got an old price list and will scan it later and post it on the forum. Well the estate GL5 £7874.00 + Car Tax of £656.17 + VAT £1279.53 £9809.70 or if you had the Auto it was £10151.05 in total. There was only a few extras you could have like a electric sunroof for £642.85!

I don't think you can get anything bigger than a 1.6 in the mk1, there were certainly no 5 cylinder models.

Also the 2.3 KX engine is actually a 2.2 (2226cc) The 2.3s came later (2309cc) VW refers to the 2226 as being a 2.3 sometimes and even 2.23 as well.

At the risk of both bumping a very old thread, and sounding like an idiot at the same time; how exactly do I find out specifically which engine I have in my B1 passat? My engine code is 049 103 373 but I've no idea how this translates to the above! Its a 1.6 petrol estate variant if that also helps?

Thanks if you can help!

That's no engine code but the spare part number of the cylinder head. :D

Your engine code will be YN (75hp) or YP (85HP), I guess - 1.6L. You can find the engine code on the passenger side of the engine block, embossed in an approx. 8x1 cm patch almost at the top. Take some fine sand paper to smooth the surface, to read the letters.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I figure this is one of those posts that would be useful if it were pinned. Anyhow, I'm new to these so doing some research. Today I went to see a B2 GL5 estate which the seller described as a 1.9 1983 model. I don't see that here.

Edit: Just realised the post is pinned ;)
