Both red circles (if you can call 'em circles) are where i've put my blanking plates. Undo 4 bolts (i think they're called hex bolts?) stick your blanking plate between the EGR and the manifold and the other one where the other circle is. That pipe is quite flexible too. Put it all back together and that's it - job done.
To know if your EGR is open or not, just look at it from the top. As you can see on my pic, it's open - you can clearly see the gap.
