RNS315 Maps Not Displayed

Hi,
So I am now the owner of a 2012 Estate with an RNS 315 installed. Sounds lovely, but no maps visible on the satnav. I see the position marked, it thinks it is scrolling in and out but it's all on a blue background. Easy enough to buy new maps, but where would the old ones have gone to? My father in law (previous owner) said 'they just disappeared. And I only travel local so I'm not too worried'.
But from my reading, I thought the maps should be saved on some internal hard drive / memory. Is there a way to reset? Or does this indicate something more fundamentally ill with the unit....
