B6 LHS speakers dud

Hi all, I have an issue with my front and rear LHS speakers. They hardly emit any sound at all whereas the RHS are working fine. For the last few months I've just cranked the balance control over to favour the RHS but I would really like to get the issue sorted.
I can't put any volume whatsoever through the LHS side speakers without massive distortion, they sound absolutely terrible.
As there is some sound coming from the LHS speakers I'm guessing the wiring is OK, so it's either the speakers themselves or could it be the amplifier or head unit?? I have a B6 sport which I think has an amplifier under the passenger seat but I've not actually checked to be fair.
Any advice on things I can test or likely problems gratefully received, thanks in advance.
