B5.5 Center dash refit after ice install

Hi all, after successfully getting my double din Pioneer unit to work, I'm struggling to get the center console trim to go back on!!! I had to strip everything back as the previous owner had a Parrot system in there buried under the climate control unit. Anyway, it seems to be stuck on the cage where the air con unit screws in. When I do get it flush fitting it crushes the opening to fit the aircon back in which can't be right. Has anyone else had issues getting the trim back on? It obviously came off so it must go back on lol!! Any help gratefully received!!
