Gamma radio am reception

purchased a 1.9tdi 4motion recently (last week) which needed a lotta work doing which I'm half way through. One of the things which is bugging me is the lack of am reception. When i say lack i mean none. I've had the stereo out all connectors in place. I've disconnected the rear aerial out the back of the stereo and on FM it loses a bit of clarity reconnected fine. However there is no am. I've replaced the antennae with a new one and still the same. I really don't want to start taking of the headliner to look at the base as I'm worried it won't go back in pkace. Any suggestions or case of headliner gotta come out???
