DVD player picture problems

Hi all.
I'm after picking the brains of all you techy chaps out there. I have installed an Android head unit into my Passat B7 estate.
LOVE the unit, especially linked up with my mobile wifi hotspot
Now then...... I have problems playing DVD's... they read and play sound fine but the picture is made up of one main picture bordered by other parts of the picture. See the photo attached.
Any Ideas??
Ideally, i'd love to use VLC for reading my DVD's but VLC does not detect the DVD drive....
Chuck some ideas at me please.
