VW MFD1 install (picture heavy)

Post by staffordcox »

Hi there chaps and chapettes, I thought I’d post up about the install I’ve just completed on my 2002 B5.5 wagon. I bought the car late last year and really like it, but I wanted a nav unit installed. My last 2 Tom-tom units got stolen from different car so I really didn’t want a standalone unit, and using Google maps on my iPhone is fine, until somebody calls you and the nav switches off. Pioneer Appradio2 has a very similar fault/flaw/annoyance with the maps program and aftermarket units are often expensive, sometimes a bit vulgar and mostly shiny and attractive to the local scrotes that think they can just take whatever they like. So, all that combined with me really liking the OEM look of the Passat, I thought I’d have a go at getting a VW MFD working....

First of all, I sourced a good condition MFD1 unit from on here (thanks dubster16v)

It came with all the relevant cables (or so I thought) and was a really good buy for the money so I set straight to it and got it fitted (all be it roughly with all the panels not being put back on properly) and ran straight into some problems.

I didn’t have a nav CD, so I scoured a few torrent sites to see if I could evaluate one to make sure it was all working. I then realised I need an external antenna, so bought one of these:

This gave a few available satelites but it still didn’t want to follow me and kept saying ‘you are not on a digitised road’. After a couple of weeks of mucking about and trying different things, I thought I’d put a post on here before giving up and going for an aftermarket one:

The response as ever was great and it pointed me towards a copied nav CD:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 1086152477

The CD improved things, in as much as it knew where I was on the map most of the time but it would still wouldn’t follow me on the map. Next up was this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260785900980? ... 1497.l2649

And hey presto!! After running it for a day or two and it gradually starting to catch up, it works!! And it works quite well for a nav unit of its age. Best of all though, it looks completely stock and matched the dash colours. I have also fitted a connects2 unit to it so I can play my phone through the stereo too. I took some pictures as I was refitting it properly and thought I’d post them on here….

So, I have a reasonable understanding of the install of one of these now, if I can help anybody with getting theres working at all, please do not hesitate to contact me and I'll do my best.

Massive thanks go to dubster16v for supplying the original unit, and matt_o121 for his assistance in my post. This is what these forums are all about and your help is much appreciated guys.
