speaker issue

i have a 1997 b5 and ive got a problem with the speakers.The speakers in the rear door behind the drivers seat dont work,neither the main speaker or the little tweeter.i took the door card off as i thought they may of been dissconected at some point but everything looks in order.is there any other wiring that i could check before i start forking out for new speakers?

i have changed the original cassette player for a JVC cd player so could there be an issue somewhere there? to be honest i never noticed if they were working before i changed the stereo

is this a known problem?

also could somebody reccomend some speakers,ones that i could just do a straight swap over without having to buy adaptors.
