4awg or 8awg?

I'm picking up my new subs this week and will only be running the one 800 watt amp to start with but plan to run another in the future for the other speakers in the car.
So my question is..... Should I run an 8awg power cable or can I run a 4awg cable in with a distribution block to step down to 8awg?
