Gamma headunit, automatically decreases volume?

Hey guys,
I bought another passat, and this time I have left the standard gamma unit in as the previous owner has fitted an ipod connector to it and a sub wiring kit.
I connected my sub up etc. and found that the door speakers have heavier gauge wires to them.
So the sound system sounds pretty decent. Although when i have it loud it sometimes quietens itself down, especially with rock music.
I'm wondering if this must be an overload system within the headunit? It is still clear when it has been ramped up, just it quietens itself down slightly after a few seconds.
Is there any way of disabling it?
It is not the "GALA" option in the headunit as i have that off.
Any help much appreciated. I like to feel my music haha
