Winter grill blocking off

So am at work bored on eBay and I come around a winter grill for my 1.9tdi b5 , its got me thinking is there anyone point of doing this in the UK yes we had good winter last year is there any pros and cons and surly pipe insulation would work just and good and be cheap ... does anyone do this ?
