We did it !! - BHF Bike ride 22nd May 2011

Post by mifkif » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:29 am

Hi,

Ant and I are going to participate in a charity event, organised by and for a great cause - The British Heart Foundation.

The event will be taking part on the 22nd May 2011. Although we have set our goal as the 22mile route, I am led to believe that this will kill my legs. So I had best get into some sort of training!

If you could spare even just a £1 it can and does make all the difference to this charity and will be greatly appreciated by all involved. A £1 is all I am asking, as if there are enough donations the numbers will soon add up.

Here is a link to the event page - https://www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/eve ... ps=1001132

Here is the link to my sponsorship page - http://www.justgiving.com/Matthew-Metcalf

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Well this Sunday is the day, and with the exception of Foz, we have received no sponsorship at all.

How bad is that? It's cost me £10 just to enter!

Anyone feel the urge to pledge even £1?

Dont worry, i've not forgot. I'll make payment later. I am however slightly disappointed and a bit embarrassed at the distinct lack of sponsorship from fellow members. Not a lot really to ask for just 1 pound....is it? :???:

Thanks for all the pledges. We did it !!!!!

We planned on meeting at 8am, but as usual I was a little late  Road closure about 2 miles away from the location meant doubling back and going a couple of junctions down the motorway.

Registration done. We had a choice of Bronze - 22 Miles, Silver - 29 miles, Gold - 50 Miles. We all opted for the Bronze route. We then sat and awaiting for the start.............

We were released in waves and Zoe, Ant & I went off in the third or fourth wave. From the off I think it became apparent that Ant's distinct lack of training (he hasn't even been on the bike for a year  ) was going to bite him big time. A cheeky down hill, followed by an endless climb saw him fall right off the pace. Zoe pushed on. I got into to a right groove and was even giving the road boys some grief.

Now pleased with myself I paid no attention to any signs, and missed the turning for the Bronze route. After about an hour riding I came upon a feeding station. I would normally just sail on by feeding stations, as they tend to interrupt my cadence too much, but I saw Zoe was there  I stopped and asked how she had got ahead of me, at this point Zoe, with a smile on her face, informed me of my clattering error  I had followed the silver route, so just an extra 7 miles slotted in there for me #-o

Ant rocked up a short while after and looked like a broken man. He had done well to say he hadn't ridden for so long though. After a short abuse session and some food the trio set off again. Ant was clearly in a huge amount of pain, and yet again we rode our own race. Zoe and I managed to stay together this time and were reeling in a few riders one by one. Good job we stuck together as I nearly took the turning for the gold route, which would have been a massive mistake!! Only Zoe sailing on past the turning made me read the sign properly.

At the bottom of the last hill we decided to wait so we could finish as we started - together. We waited a fair few minutes, then gave Ant a call. Luckily he wasn't to far behind, and then again the team were united. Ant did tell us we should have carried on, but the team spirit was high for Zoe and I at this point.

Zoe and I got to the summit, literally 200 yards from the end, and we hauled up again to allow Mr I Don't Need To Train, to catch up. Then it started to p1ss it down, big time!! Zoe made the call to cross the line, and get into the safety of the Information Centre. Who was I to argue :-

Medal's given and Ant was right there, so he didn't do too badly in the end. The star of the show was Zoe though, she had done more training than the pair of us, and put in a right good fight against the other male riders :ymapplause:

Hopefully Ant will use this as the springboard he needs to regain his former fitness level. The we can get on with the next ride. I am trying to push him to do another this year, but he was not open to that suggestion immediately after todays ride.

Here are a couple of shots of the day..........
