Sport mode & MPG

So I drive the DSG in Drive mode all day every day which is supposedly the economical mode. I get average 34 MPG on the DIS. So today went out and decided to put it into sport mode and see what happens and how it drives. Sport mode on normal roads then hit a 2 mile county section. On getting home my MPG was showing as 49.9.......work that one out I can't! It seems you get better mpg pushing the revs to it limit lol.
