Why didn't my alarm go off?

So last week my B5.5 was broken into and my Pioneer head unit stolen 
They forced the drivers side lock, however my alarm never went off. This was overnight on my drive.
Is there a reason why my alarm never went off? i know it works because i've set it off by accident a few times.
