buying VCDS

Hi all,
Im sure this has probably been discussed before but most likely due to my rubbish searching skills i am drawing a blank.
Has anyone got any recommendations for where I can buy the VCDS cable and software. IT needs to be compatible with a vw passat b6 (2006) but also within the VW transporter T5/5.1 range (2005 - 2013/4)
I am very confused as there appears to be some very cheap cables and some very expensive and not many with the actual software. Some seem to suggest i can get away with VCDS Lite if im only looking to mostly diagnose faults and adjusts and enable settings on the car and use with a single laptop?
Any help or recommendations would be very much appreciated, I am a complete noob when it comes to VAG diagnostics, but I was quite lucky during my Peugeot/Citroen ownership days of having there main dealer software peugeot planet and diagbox for vehicles up to about 2015 and it proved invaluable.
