Balance shaft rebuild - opinions needed

Post by ski2121 »

Hello all!,
Require some opinions on my parents b6 (2.0L BKP), its on 158k and the balance shaft went. My parents thought it was low oil, and managed to add at least 5L plus to the engine! it was then driven 1.5 miles to the garage though, the garage then drained the oil and replaced the oil pressure sensor and ran it again, then realised that wasn't the problem.

Ive got around to stripping it, expected a ruined engine, however there wasnt much metal in the bottom of the sump, and the bores from underneath look fine. Ive not been able to inspect the shells yet.

Now on to the unit, the hex key is slightly rounded, its the balance shaft that is worse. However when spinning the gears it was still running the oil pump ok.

My questions are how bad does this look? worth repairing the balance shaft or is the engine likely gone?
And when rebuilding the oil pump and shafts should I use thread lock on all bolts?
