Sat Nav Updates

I have a 2016 B8 Passat with Dicover Media Gen 2 Nav. My system is November 15, and I believe there are updates in May and November 16. The updates are free, but you have to be computer literate to backup sd file to computer, download zip file to do something else, load updates, some info says the card is locked to the car, there's a lot out there who appear to be dancing through hoops to do this update! Why can't it be like Volvo, when it goes for service they update it automatically, my Tomtom is easy plug into laptop and update done. Why do VW make it so complicated?
Rant over, anyone done it, I was considering buying an sd card and download to that but I bet an sd card from VW is stupid money, is there an alternative sd card that might work?
Any ideas anyone?
