Fuel Filter Change on Passat 2012 B7

Hi There,
I am currently on to do all the basic servicing myslef on my Passat 2012 B7 2.0. Really fed up of the dealership, I doubt they even do anything. I am also trying to get some help from the Haynes Manual, which is to be honest quiet good. Now, do I need VCDS for my Fuel filter change? Or just top-up the filter caseing with fresh diesel after inserting the new filter. Haynes suggests the top method, however there are quiet a few discussions that suggest VCDS. I just dont want to mess things too much, and stay as much mechanical as possible.
Help will be much appriciated.
