purchasing Vag-com advises sources etc.

Hello
Many of you here are lot more experienced than me, so you may share where did you get yr vag-com from.
I've searched eBay, there's ones that are £5 cable + CD, however noticed some ofmthem point out not compatible with VW Caddy, ..., Passat mk6. Doesn't mention Passat b7 tho.
There's also 2 sellers that sell what seem more to be decent stuff, they are £50 quid for cable + CD.
Or rather would it be easier to buy just a cable, and download program from ross-tech?
I suppose there's plenty options.
2 important notes: my car Passat b7, and my laptop is runned on Windows 7.
