vag com advice needed

me and my bro are thinking of getting some sort of code reading device between us but im not sure which way to go
if we had vag com we would need a cheap lap top

can anyone tell me what we need to buy from ross tech

is there an alternative to vag com for checking and clearing codes thats any good

ps my car is 2001 pd 130
my bros car is a 2002 18t
and a corrado vr6

any info much appreciated
