333K Mileage (and whether to keep going)

Post by Jimmo » Sun Oct 13, 2019 5:01 pm

Hello folks

I have been registered on the forum for a while, but don't really post. I do tend to lurk and read some of the tech items and problems etc for trouble shooting.

I've had my 2007 B6 Passat for nearly 10 years and it has become somewhat of an old friend. I've become quite attached to the old thing and I suppose there is also some sentimentality given I sat in it for 298K of the miles.

That said it has almost reached 333K but has been a bit smokey over the last couple of months. A new clutch, timing belt and tandem pump have been carried out since May 2019. It has an MOT to June 2020 and it flew through its recent MOT with the tester telling me the car is still solid.

It is currently laid up with a suspected turbo failure. albeit the engine still runs like new on idle. :( :(

If indeed it turned out to be ONLY a turbo failure (with no peripheral damage) and outlay could be £600-800 to repair, would you guys go on or call it a day. Can these cars go on much longer at this level of mileage?

Everyone around me keeps telling me to scrap it :-@ , but I'm having trouble parting with it :((

Your thoughts would be appreciated and thanks again.

PS I hope I've posted this the correct section,

Sorry I should have noted the engine type

Not sure how to get the engine code itself, but its the 1.9TDi S (105). It is a 2007 (57 plate).

Most important thing is servicing. If it's been regularly serviced with correct specification oil etc, there can be some good life left in it, but you will never know, how much. It might give up tomorrow, it might last another 200k miles. In your case I would replace turbo with another good used unit, most likely you can get it for £100-150(not sure on exact going rate of these), and if handy with spanners, replace it yourself, not hard job to be honest. If not, garage will do it for about 150 I'm guessing, so you won't spend fortune on car which most likely is less worth than new turbo unit, and neither you know how long it will last.

Its the BXE code :0

As confirmed from the label in the boot spare-well. I had read about this code a couple of years ago but chose not to get too concerned about it and buried my head in the sand. x_x

TBH I never even checked at that time whether my car was one of them. I was already well over the 200K mark at that point.

Not good then , only proceed with turbo if you also do the big end bearings .

We are mad aren't we for getting sentimental about our cars. It is just a lump of metal really.

I would be gutted if anything terminal (bad crash etc) happened to our car.
Have you been mis-sold TDi.

Must be one of the very last BXE lol most self destructed long ago!

If you like it keep it going, simple if its not costing much. You could buy something nearly new and still shell out plenty if you get the wrong one and theres plenty of sharks peddling junk out there.

A recon turbo and fitting should be in the region of 400 - 500 i would think.
