Minimentals:- Jeep Cherokee XJ 2.5D Manual

Post by MiniMental » Sat Feb 09, 2019 1:57 pm

As title really. I’m in search of a cheap Cherokee XJ 2.5 TD Manual if anybody has or knows of one that’s going? Project. Didn’t need to have MOT but the less rust and closer to Swindon the better. Let me know.

Isn't that engine one big problem? At least feedback never been good about them. My mate had 2004 years grand Cherokee which is next generation I believe, and that car was spending more time in garage on ramps then driving somewhere. Engine was fine ( it's mercedes diesel engine used in them) but transmission issues and front/rear differential problems felt like never ending. He was more than happy after getting rid of it.

Nah. It’s not gonna be a daily. I want it to tear apart, throw a lift kit and winch bumpers on, built axles etc They’re just as good as a landrover according the the offroad reviews. I don’t wanna shell out on a defender and don’t like the disco. The engine has coolant issues if not regularly changed, but that’s about it. Can be stripped down in half hour. Pushrod valve actuation and separate heads/cylinder. Nice and simple.

Nice and simple unless you have to take the heads off it's not a easy job that's for sure! Same gasket and bolts means heads can't be skimmed.
Don't think lifts are that easy either.
I'm a little bias but discos are cool, cheap to repair too

Lifts take a couple hours an axle bud. Certainly not difficult from what I’ve seen. No different to landrover platform in principle. Still Live axles. Leaf sprung rear which I’ll convert to coils and four control arms on the front with coils.

Regards to heads being difficult, I own a B5 S4... half of the underbonnet work is engine/trans out, the 2.5 VM41B is ridiculously laughably simple in comparison. The disco is far to big and bulky for what I want. I’ve been around them, I just don’t really like them tbh bud.

This turned into a pros and cons post quickly. I only wanted to know if anybody knew of any for sale

What's new in here, any off-roading fun happened or not yet?

Non yet mate. It’s off the road for a while while I do some work.

Needs the front diff rebuilding (bearings gone) and a clutch release bearing/rear crank seal and a few other bits and pieces doing. Nothing major.

Then I’ll be starting to modify it and prep it for what I want from it. Hehe.

True. Last thing you want in middle of nowhere is lost clutch or diff. Especially if deeply stuck in mud.

Exactly mate. To be fair, I got it for a steal £500 down from £1200.

The body work is immaculate corrosion wise, few dents and beat up paint but no rust anywhere really. Underneath looks new for its age so I’m buzzing as I know they’re renowned for rust issues. Even the engine is great, couple of minor leaks but seems very well looked after thus far. Full stamped main dealer history as well which the guy didn’t even know or tell me Laughing at that price. Can’t find one (60th Anni) for under £2.5k online.

I’ll be aiming to build a nice, compact overland vehicle to take off-roading in Europe/wales/Scotland and maybe North Africa if my overtime picks up at work. Something along these lines.

Image

Just need to get it to an excellent base first before I start playing with it. I like the Cherokees because they’re small but big. Discovery is too big for what I want and defender costs far too much. Cherokee is cheap, a phenomenal aftermarket parts selection for anything you wanna do.

Sounds like a good plan.
Two my mates were doing and bit of off-roading some years ago. One had terrano mk2, which still give a lot of fun, but in my opinion is little to long or need to be rised up to go over ditches etc. Other mate had little two door Isuzu trooper, which definitely felt a bit more able to maneuver due to size and shorter wheel base.

But that feeling is so good, when you can go anywhere. Bloody car addiction

Okay. Long overdue Update:
I’ve spent the majority of summer rebuilding most of it.

My basic done list sits at:
Full major service including ALL fluids and filters etc
Both propshafts fully refurbished
Glow plug loom rebuilt
Rad change and full coolant strip and flush
Rear end engine reseal
All four wheel bearings done
Wiring loom to tailgate rebuilt fully
New track bar
Steering Box reconditioned
New pitman ball joint
Front carrier bearings changed and new axle seals
Front knuckle ball joints replaced to cure DW
Tailgate struts
New HD 5 Leaf rear springs
Rear outer undercarriage/arches/rails stripped to bare metal, acid treated and POR 15’d in black.
All wheel lugs replaced with solid chromed ones.
Various other repairs and servicing
New rear view mirror and mount

Mods so far:
2.5” front lift to match HD leaf height
Rear disc conversion
Air Con full delete
Roof rack
Steel steering box spacer

Planned Mods:
31” Muds & 15/16” Steels
ARB Disconnects
Full length frame rail stiffeners next year
HD rear bumper and tyre/accessory carrier
HD Front winch Bumper
Onboard air setup
Box section HD sills
Steering linkage upgrade
Eventually an 8.25”/D44 rear axle with an Ox Locker and chromoly shafts
Front D30 will be trussed along with tube inserts and outer seals, chromoly shafts and an oxlocker. Both geared to 4.56.
Roof Top Tent
Full length roof Rack/Tray
Snorkel/Spots/Floods etc
Rear storage built into trunk with fridge etc.
CB Radio
Skid plates for steering gear, fuel tank/transmission etc
SYE and rear double cardan driveshaft
Rear quarter armour etc etc

The list goes on but you get the idea. One of three cars I have. And the only none VAG car I’ve ever owned. Safe to say I think it’s awesome and I won’t EVER get rid by choice. Haha.

I have a front pinion bearing issue to sort out this moth and hopefully it’ll be golden for winter as I haven’t really driven it much since acquiring it in February. Any and all work on it is done by myself. It’ll only ever see a garage for tracking or an MoT if I can help it.

Far too many build photos to upload here but they can all be found on my instagram @minimenta1 or the other two groups afore mentioned.

Fair play if you made it reading this far.

Aidan.

Thanks for update pal. Some how few weeks ago I thought if there's anything going on about this project and here we go. Quite impressive list of things. Good to go over all technical points/problems, because last thing you want is something to break down in middle of nowhere. Keep us updated and I'm waiting to see it covered in mud all over to roof :-bd

Well my passat is parked up at the minute awaiting repairs before I can MOT it so the Jeep is now my daily, which is how it should be for winter anyway tbh.

Since the above I’ve done yet more work, rebuilt the front diff again, all new bearings this time,

I’ve also added an Aux electrical system which is all neat and wired in properly, and currently powers my roof lights with 4 spare relays/switches for other items I intend to add. Winch, onboard air, CB Radio etc.

Also changed the headlights, rear plate, added wind deflectors and a lock unit and fob from a breaker so it now has remote locking back and I don’t feel like such a peasant. Haha.

Pictures below As I said before there are hundreds of pics from my entire build so far on my instagram @minimenta1 For all things me

Well, I stripped and rebuilt the rear diff on Tuesday. Good job I did. Over never seen pinion bearings that worn out It was actually wearing the cage!

Now lovely and quiet other than regular jeep noise
